Healthy Teeth: A Guide for Children in Care

Taking care of your teeth might not seem like the most exciting part of your day, but it’s super important! Here’s everything you need to know to keep your smile bright and healthy.

Why Do My Teeth Matter?

You only get two sets of teeth in your life:

  • Baby teeth (around age 1).
  • Adult teeth (between ages 10–12).

Once your adult teeth grow they’re yours for life. Losing or damaging them can cause problems and you won’t get another set so it’s essential to take care of them.

Here’s why healthy teeth are important:

  • Eating: Teeth make it easier to chew foods like apples or nuts. Missing teeth can make this painful or difficult.
  • Appearance: Your teeth are a big part of your smile. Looking after them keeps your smile looking great!
  • Overall Health: Studies show that healthy teeth are linked to better general health and a longer life.
  • Fresh Breath: Dirty teeth can cause bad breath. Regular cleaning ensures your breath stays fresh.

Why Should I Brush My Teeth?

Everyone’s mouths are home to bacteria (tiny living germs). When you eat, especially sugary foods, these bacteria feed on the leftovers. Their waste forms plaque—that sticky, rough layer you feel on your teeth before brushing.

If plaque isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar, which can cause:

  • Tooth Decay: This happens when teeth dissolve, forming holes that can lead to infections and toothache.
  • Gum Disease: Plaque irritates your gums, making them red, swollen and prone to bleeding.
  • Yellow Teeth & Bad Breath: Tartar buildup stains teeth and smells!

Brushing clears away plaque and keeps your teeth healthy!

What Happens If I Need a Filling?

If your tooth develops a cavity (hole), it may need a filling to stop food from getting stuck in the hole and the damage from spreading.

Here’s what happens during a filling:

  1. Numbing: The dentist uses a tiny needle to numb the area, so you don’t feel pain.
  2. Drilling: They remove the decayed part of the tooth.
  3. Filling: The hole is filled with a special material (like metal or white resin).
  4. Shaping: The dentist makes sure the filling matches your bite.
  5. Finishing Up: You rinse and wait a few hours before eating on that side.

It’s quick and modern tools make the process as comfortable as possible!

How to Look After Your Teeth

Caring for your teeth doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Brush Twice a Day:
    • Brush before breakfast and bedtime for about 2 minutes.
    • Use toothpaste with fluoride, which strengthens teeth and make sure it is the correct one for your age.

  2. Clean Between Your Teeth:
    • Use floss or small brushes to remove food stuck between teeth regularly.
  3. Healthy Eating Habits:
    • Avoid sugary snacks and drinks between meals.
    • Great snack options: Cheese, plain crackers/bread or nuts (if not allergic).
    • Best drinks: Water or milk.
  4. Regular Dental Checkups:
    • Visit the dentist every 6–12 months to spot and fix problems early.

What If My Teeth Aren’t Straight?

Sometimes teeth grow unevenly naturally, other times they become misaligned due to habits like thumb-sucking.

  • Why Braces?

Braces can help straighten teeth out! Not everyone needs braces though and your dentist will be able to advise you on this. Braces may improve how you eat, talk and clean your teeth.

  • How Braces Work:

An orthodontist (a specialist dentist) uses wires or plastic moulds to gently move your teeth into the right position.

  • How can I stop sucking my thumb?

There are some useful top tips on stop sucking your thumb here and it would be worth having a chat with your carer about a possible reward for when you stop!

What If I Damage My Teeth?

Accidents happen and teeth can get chipped or knocked out. If this happens:

  1. Keep any pieces safe (put them in milk if possible).
  2. Contact your dentist immediately.

Fast action can sometimes save a tooth!

What If I Get Toothache?

Toothache can be caused several different causes including infections or decay. Don’t ignore it!

  • Ask your carer to call the dentist for advice.
  • Pain relief medicines can help until your appointment.

Remember, Your Teeth Are for Life!

With simple daily care, regular dental visits and healthy eating habits, your teeth can last a lifetime. Take pride in your smile—it’s worth it!
