Carers attending an Adult Health Report (AH) medical

Watch this to find out key information about your AH medical

The information is also below in writing if that is easier

Thank you!

Being a carer is a chance to help a young person to heal damage from the past and transform the rest of their life! You are doing a fabulous thing - thank you!

Why is a Medical Assessment Required?

A medical assesment is required because the government says that all carers -whether adoptive parents, foster carers, or Special Guardianship Carers, undergo a medical assessment. We aim to identify and review any health or mental health issues that could affect your ability to care for a child. It also helps identify any additional support you may need to provide the best care possible.

This may be when you are hoping to become a carer or as part of a review to support an existing carer.

Think of it as a health MOT - many people find it a useful opportunity for some health tips and guidance!

What Happens During the Medical?

During an Adult Health (AH) medical assessment with Baker Baker Health, a GP with experience in Looked After Children (LAC) will review health information provided by the carer, their GP and the social worker. The doctor will discuss the carer’s medical history and gather any additional information needed to assess their fitness to care for a child.

The AH medical exam may include the following:

  • Urine test
  • Blood pressure check
  • Height and weight measurement
  • Other relevant examinations based on the health history

This thorough check ensures that carers are physically and mentally prepared to provide the best possible care.

How Long Does the Medical Take?

The appointment typically lasts around 30 minutes.

Where Does the Medical Information Go?

After your assessment, a second doctor reviews the information to create a comprehensive report. This report summarises key health details and notes any considerations or recommendations related to your ability to care for a young person.

The final report is then reviewed by the Fostering and Adoption Panel at Social Services. They will consider this alongside other factors in determining your suitability as a carer.

What if English is not my first language and I'm not confident in it?

If English is not your first language and you aren’t confident speaking it, please inform us and the social worker in advance. The social worker will arrange an interpreter to ensure clear communication. We have extensive experience working with interpreters, helping young people feel comfortable and supported in expressing themselves fully.

What Should You Do Before the Medical?

Before your appointment, make sure you have:

  • Completed Part B of the Adult Health Report form (given to you by your Social Worker).

What to Bring to Your Appointment:

Please bring the following items:

  • Adult Health Report (with Part A completed by your Social Worker and Part B completed by you).
  • Any information about your health that you think may be helpful
  • A urine sample collected on the day of your appointment.

What if I need to cancel or change the appointment?

We understand that sometimes things happen and appointments need changing. This appointment is really important though in allowing care arrangements to progress quickly, so if it is possible please prioritise this. However if it really needs changing please email: We are awaiting a secure NHS.net email address. In the meantime please use hello@bakerbakerhealth.com with no personal information.

Finally...

There’s no need to worry - we're here to help and we're committed to making the process as smooth as possible. This medical assessment is just one part of ensuring that children are placed in safe, loving environments. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for you to get a free health check-up!
